Blatant Cross Promotion!

I've chosen Pinterest for my Knowledge Sharing/Tracking assignment and I need YOUR VIEWS! To set the stage...

I was a drum major for the Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps for 3 years (2000-2002). During this time I was nominated for the Jim Jones Best Drum Major Award in 2001. I learned a lot during my time as a DM and after I aged out I spent a good amount of time working with drum majors in local marching bands and drum corps. For the better part of a decade I worked with many DM's. Yes on how to conduct, but more importantly how to be a good leader. Being a drum major is more how you present yourself and work with your band/drum corps to be the best. To work hard, even when you don't want to. To be a figure that people can look up to and respect is very difficult (especially when you are charged with leading a group of your peers. Peers that are between the ages of 14 and 22).

Eventually I started to create facebook groups for each high school/drum corps where we could build a professional community. We would share ideas, articles, videos, helpful hints, and previous experiences to help each other develop as drum majors. A couple of these groups have remained years after I stopped working with them and it warms my heart to go back and see what they're up to. Drum majors that I worked with in 2008 are working with new DM's in 2017. That never happened before!

Sooooooo I've compiled all of the articles, images, videos, etc. from these facebook groups into a pinterest board. This board is more helpful to anyone who aspires to be in a leadership position. Many, if not all, of these pins do not directly address drum major issues, but leadership as a whole. Please check it out, read some articles, watch some vids and let me know what you think in the comments below :)

  1. Kyle, I did not know this about you! It seems that drumming has been a big part of your life, and I can definitely see the leadership component reflected in our Trends & Issues class project that we are working on. As you can tell, I sniffed this out on day 1 when I nominated you as team leader!

I am checking out the Pinterest board now. This is a creative idea, and I'm looking forward to your VoiceThread.

    1. Hey Devlin! If I could be a drummer I would, but alas my left hand has a mind of its own. A drum major is a tad different. We're in front of the band (or in my case the corps) conducting during the show, and then making sure everything gets done behind the scenes both on and off the field. And yes, I've held quite a few leadership positions. Always happy to oblige :)

    2. Ah, I see. That makes sense! Thanks for the clarification.
