Discord & Gamification

Discord is a group messaging/voicechat application specifically targeting gamers. What separates this application from a more traditional program like skype is the CoP. Discord has the ability to create large CoP's affiliated with specific themes (currently individual gaming communities), but it doesn't necessarily have to be this way. I've set up an, "eLearning and Discord" server for everyone to check out. It's barebones at the moment, but consider the medium. If we as IDers want to lower the barrier to entry, as well as "gamify" instructional material, why not bring the material to the learner?

What do you think? Is Discord something you think could be used in our industry, or is it just another free Web 2.0 application? Leave your comments below

  1. Kyle, good idea! Discord is generally for audio chatting, right? I do recognize it as something used in the gaming community, but don't have any hands-on experience with it myself. What is the ideal scenario where an ID would use this?

    1. Hi Devlin. Yes Discord began as primarily an audio chat app for PC gamers, but with the inclusion of #channels, hyperlinking and @direct messaging it has the potential to be utilized as a strong Web 2.0 tool. Especially considering the barrier to entry will be lower since many learners have already integrated the application into their (gaming) lives.

  2. DISCORD IS AWESOME! It needs more recognition. It isn't just for gaming, a lot of reddit sites have a discord and a lot of communities use discord for instant chats and sharing of material, the voice chat is an awesome bonus, making irc channels become more relevant. YAY DISCORD
